also known as endodontic therapy, endodontic treatment, or root canal therapy, mostly done due to infection in the pulp of the tooth. The infection mostly is spread by the extensive caries that exposes the pulp, the most sensitive part of the tooth that carries the blood. Root canal treatment is done to remove the infected pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals. It is the debridement & the decontamination of the tooth protecting it from the future microbial invasion.
Endodontic therapy involves the removal of infected structures, the subsequent shaping, cleaning, and decontamination of the hollows with small files and irrigating solutions, and the obturation (filling) of the decontaminated canals.
Mostly the decayed teeth need to be filled after removal of decay. After decay removal the cavity is filled using a dental restorative material so that the tooth can be used for eating. One can not eat his food in presence of cavity, as through the cavity the dental pulp (the most sensitive part of the tooth) comes directly in contact with the food. Thus creates lots of pain & sensitivity. If the pulp is exposed, the tooth needs root canal treatment.
Commonly used materials for filling cavities are , silver amalgum, different dental cements such as, composite resin, glass ionomer, zinc phosphate cement, zinc oxide eugenol, etc.
